Cookie’s Buttons

Yesterday was great. It was a fun day at work and even though I was working by myself there were still plenty of customers to talk to and get to know. A lot of self proclaimed regulars were in the store and they all seemed very nice. There was one difficult customer but she ended up walking away happy, well as happy as she could have been, I think she is normally a grump, but she wasn’t furious when she left, so that was good.

My mom started a button collection a few years ago and last week I happened upon a button collection from my bosses grandmother that they were going to sell. I scooped it right up and thought it would be a great gift for Christmas. The tin was very beat up so I decided to look for something better for her to keep them in. The other day I happened upon a depression glass cookie jar with the word cookies on it that would have been perfect. My moms nickname is Cookie and it was the right size.

I really wanted to get it but it was a bid item and with the shipping it would have been close to $60. So I was disappointed to let it go, but I did. Well, wouldn’t you know that while I was at work yesterday I just happened to look up in a spot I usually look at and low and behold, there was the same jar, in better shape and for 25% off $50?! How fucking strange and wonderful is that?! I never saw it there before and like magic it was there, right in front of my face :)

The jar pictured above is the photo from the auction site. That one has a green lid and the label isn’t as worn as the one in the store which has a silver lid. The label at the store has the “s” worn off so it says “COOKIE” how seriously perfect :)

I’m getting it today, I have already set it aside! I hope she loves her gift. I think she will! Me and the boys enjoyed going through the buttons so I can see why she likes to collect them :) It’s definitely the most thoughtful gift I’ve ever gotten for anyone. I always have big ideas about thoughtful gifts but they never work out. I hope it will mean a lot to her. Giving it means a lot to me.

Moody blue

Yesterday was good, although I obviously didn’t get as much stuff done as I had wanted to. I say obviously because I should have known it would have taken me hours to paint. I did paint though and was able to sand between the two coats of color I got on. You guys, this color is GORGEOUS! I want to paint the world in it! I won’t though because it would take 30 lifetimes hehe.

The color we chose for the cabinet is called Black Blue by Farrow and Ball. It is fantastic and is a midnight blue to rival all the others. I can’t wait to show you the cabinet when it’s all finished. Here is a little preview for now, it doesn’t look like much yet, but believe me it’s going to look moody and sexy when I am done :)

I am kind of embarrassed to show that picture because it is for far from being done but at least it proves I’ve been working (and not cleaning the house). It still needs another coat of Black Blue, maybe even two and I need to work on the back wall. I haven’t decided yet if I am just going to paint the shelf pieces or all of it in the Black Blue.

I did get a nice color to go on the back wall and you can kind of see one coat on there (not on the shelf supports) but I think I am leaning towards all blue. It’s lighted inside and there are glass shelves. Wouldn’t some beautiful china just look great “floating” in there? I think so but will have to turn the light on and see if it doesn’t get swallowed up by the darkness.

I was also able to get a coat of primer onto the drawer and one side of each of the bottom doors. I might go do the other side of the doors and put a second coat on the drawer after I am done writing. I do have work at 11 though so I don’t want to get all into it and miss time playing with the boys before I leave for the day.

I wasn’t able to get to any of the other stuff on my list so now a game plan is needed. All of the things to do are priority’s if I am going to make any money so I really need to get a move on!

Well, have a great day everyone!

Tall order

It’s been a while since I wrote last but that’s okay, things are going a-okay here. I’ve been working and even though its only about 16 hours a week, its really been a lot to adjust to! I am so happy to be working again and I absolutely love my job! I look forward to going and the time flies while I am there :)

I think I told you what my job was, but if not I will tell you now (or again). I am working for an interior designer in a consignment shop that she owns. It’s a really nice store, she only takes in nice items so there are many beautiful things to look at. She also does staging, organizing, downsizing and estate sales but I haven’t worked with her on those yet. I’ll be excited when I get to do those projects!

For now I am happily learning about the store. I’ve been working on ebay and doing well with it, I’ve been doing administrative work, which is my background, I’ve been working on pricing items and a little displaying at the store. It’s only been about two weeks so I am just getting a hang of my role and the store and my co-workers who are, by the way, all very nice.

I’ll be handling the window displays and I am very excited for that but also a little nervous. I think once I get my confidence up I’ll be great at it! So, it’s been a lot of fun and I am learning quite a bit about how a shop works. I am still interested in opening my own in a few years! That is surprising because usually I lose interest in my great ideas after a little while. I’ve been playing with furniture and the idea of opening a store up since July though, so it’s safe to say this has been the longest idea to hold my attention maybe in my whole life..

My side hustle

It’s been pretty stale in my personal inventory and flipping has been quiet for a few weeks. There are at least 4 pieces I have to work on and start moving out before I can even think about any others. I am itching to go forward though and really miss the excitement of searching for and getting something new.

Today I will be able to work on one of the cabinets. I had started by sanding it a few weeks ago but it is hard to work straight through when you have little kids. Anyway, last weekend I primed the cabinet with two coats and got the drawer and bottom doors ready for primer. I still need to sand the glass doors which will need to be done by hand because of the glass. My plan today is to do those then prime them and the other doors and drawer and then hopefully get at least one coat of color on the cabinet. FINGERS CROSSED!

I can’t wait to see the finished product. I know it is going to look gorgeous, just like I imagined it when I first saw it listed on Craigslist. I am taking my time and putting a lot of love into refreshing it because I really want the person who buys it to be in love with it, too! I can’t wait to see it with the beautiful colors we picked for it. Aidan helped me :) he’s the best!

Aside from working on the cabinet today I’d like to get a few other things done:

  • stage and photograph the Henredon loveseat and submit to Charish
  • work on my Charish page to make it look professional
  • list my dresser on Charish
  • look into dropping the price of the coffee table or offering free shipping on it
  • sand the mirror I have and prime, maybe even paint it
  • get started on restoring the hardware for the cabinet

We will see what I actually have time for. Aidan is taking the boys to his parents so I will have a few hours. If I use my time wisely I should be able to get a good bit done. What I don’t get done I should at least have a game plan in place to get it done throughout the week.

Well, happy Saturday :) I hope you all have a great weekend!

Marshal was home last weekend

Last weekend Marshal had been given a home pass and stayed here Friday thru Monday. It was a shorter visit than the last one but it was very nice to have him here. He really has taken to the program at George Junior nicely and has actually moved into a group home because he has been doing so well. I’m very proud of him. Very, very proud.

We had a lot of family parties over the weekend and he and his buddy came to my nephews birthday party on Saturday. The party was at the shore and was a long ride so I was happy they were coming with me and the little boys. Marshal was able to visit with my brother and sister, his cousins and Pop-Pop. They couldn’t believe how grown up he has become. He has a mustache now! I couldn’t believe that either!

On Sunday Regina and I had a baby shower for one of my cousins to go to. Marshal stayed here with the boys, Aidan and his buddy. Aidan and Marshal got along well and even worked together on cleaning up the kitchen. It means everything in the world to me that they have gotten back to a place where they can get along and even appreciate one another.

Marshal is scheduled for a review hearing November 30, after his Thanksgiving home pass. Since he is doing so well he will likely be offered a chance to come home for good. It’s what he’s been dreaming of for 9 months but this program is so good and he has had so much success that he’s been leaning towards finishing the school trimester there and not coming home until January. This makes me so proud of him. He has grown up and matured in ways I never imagined.

Of course I want him to come home but more than anything I want him to be successful and if that means staying there I support him 100%. I want the best for him and if having him live at school is the way I can offer it then you know I will!

Last weeks pick ups

Since my last breakdown post things have vastly improved..

Meaning I ended up getting my way.

Aidan agreed to give my 85$ project a thumbs up and was even kind enough to drive an hour and a half each way to pick up the Hendredon loveseat I was throwing a temper tantrum over.

Talk about a quality sofa! It is the most comfortable piece of furniture I’ve ever sat on. Down cushions in absolute perfect condition. I want to keep it for myself because I know we will never be able to afford such luxury first hand but the deal was that I’d sell it and sell it I will.

The upholstery is in fantastic condition but it does need a cleaning. It would be perfect for a beach house, a cottage or a cabin, or for someone who isn’t afraid of a little color. The size is perfect for a small space, a master bedroom even! I love it, I hope someone else will, too!

Aside from the loveseat I also picked up a Henredon coffee table, two lamps and a china cabinet set.

The coffee table is just being sold as is and I am listing it for a substantial amount :) It’s really gorgeous! Again I’d love to keep it for myself but it’s a glass top and with two little monkey’s running around it would either get destroyed or be the destroyer. It’s also quite large and very, very heavy. This will be the first piece I will be listing on Charish, if they accept it. Fingers crossed! I know it will definitely make someone very happy!

I have a feeling they will ask for better pictures of it, which isn’t a problem, the glass top is really heavy though (like 60 pounds!) Also in this picture I can see the old glue stuff they had between the glass and the brass. I’ll have to remove that!

The lamps I picked up were 2 white ceramic ginger jar style lamps. Simple and classic. I had the big idea that I would just flip out the shade and resell them quickly but man I had a tough time finding the right size. I finally settled on the 3rd set I purchased but they still don’t have that WOW factor I was going for.

I have now decided to gold leaf the interior part of the shade. Then they will be fancy! I also might switch out the socket for a 3 way and see if I can find a new cord just to update them a bit. In the meantime I don’t have a lot of money tied into them and they look cute where they are so I can take my time and make them perfect :)

Lastly, the china cabinets.. When I first saw these posted I really wanted them! They were listed at $125 for the set and I offered only $30 because that was all I could afford. A month later and a few conversations with the seller and both of them were mine for $40. They are in great condition physically (they are even lighted!) but ascetically they obviously need work.

I’ve already started on one cabinet. The hardware has been removed and it’s been sanded down. These cabinets are a lot of work. The hardware was harder to get off than the desk I worked on. It took almost 2 hours to remove all of it from one cabinet! Sanding it was hard also because they were lacquered. But! Now they are ready for primer and then painting and brass polishing!

I hope I can move these quickly. I’m going to price them low and one at a time because the small size should work in most of the homes around here. Plus I want young people/ budget minded people to be able to afford them! Depending on how well they turn out I plan on $75-$125 each. We will see.

Aside from picking up these items I sold a rug to more than cover my costs. I even was able to give Aidan $100 for the bank account so that was a fabulous feeling :)

And this afternoon I start my first day of work at the consignment shop! I am so excited and for a while there I thought the owner had changed her mind about me, but she pulled through! I wont be making a lot of money but any money is good and I know the experience and knowledge I gain from the business will be well worth my time.

I’m so excited!

Well, have a great day :)
